After spending way too much time figuring out what kind of hardware is required to read and burn CDG's, I ended up getting a Plextor 740A. Even then, the software it came with didn't let me copy CDG's and other Karaoke software companies said my hardware isn't compatible. However, PowerKaraoke works like a charm and is remarkably easy to use. I'm sure the good folk at Power Karaoke can tell me why even the box my Plextor came in says it's only CDG read-compatible while their software lets me write but I'm happy.
