may sound simplistic but why not put each singer in twice with a 1 and 2 in the name to indicate 1st and second song in rotation. There's often more than one singer of the same name, and often we'd identify them as (for example) Steve1 and Steve2. So then we'd be looking at cases of Steve11, Steve1...

Adam's suggestion to tweek the key of the original mp3 with Tools is best, but if you do want to edit a sound file, try Wavepad - you can pre-pend silence in hundredths of seconds. 2 songs per turn feature
I'm a little late to this thread, but certainly agree it would be nice if we could set the rotation (from a drop down) to 2 songs per turn. That's the way we run the show at our main venue, and that's a long-standing tradition at piano bar open mic shows with which many of our customers are familiar...
