newbie at creating karaoke discs

I need advice on how to get started creating Karaoke CDG discs. I'm using the trial version of Karaoke Plus. All the technical issues seem understandable. Where I'm specifically having issues is synchronizing the lyrics with the music. Isn't there a better way than dinging the spacebar? Isn't there some automated way to accomplish this?

I'm finding that getting the timing correct is near impossible and takes forever. Either I'm hitting the spacebar to slow or I'm dinging it like I'm shooting aliens in some video game. Any advice would be helpful.

Is there a way to slow the song down to a drawl?
