Changing KJ settings in all SKP versions

Why is it necessary to have the Add Singer list font modifier set between -3 and 3 to make changes to KJ settings? In the Add Singer settings it is possible to change this to a higher number. I generally prefer to set it to 6, but must lower it to change KJ settings.
