How to make a screenshot

Take a screenshot in Windows 11 or Windows 10

The easiest method is to use Snipping Tool:

1. Open the window, message, or other item that you want to capture.
2. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen will dim and the Snipping Tool controls will appear.
3. Choose a capture mode at the top of the screen:
   • Rectangle – drag around the part of the screen you want to capture.
   • Window – select the window you want to capture.
   • Full screen – capture everything on the screen.
4. After taking the screenshot, select the notification that appears to open it in Snipping Tool. You can crop or mark up the image if needed.
5. Press Ctrl + S, choose a location and file name, and then select Save. PNG or JPEG files are suitable for sending by email.
6. Attach the saved image to your email reply.

Other useful screenshot shortcuts

• Print Screen (PrtSc) – on current Windows versions, this usually opens screen snipping. Depending on your keyboard settings, it may instead copy the entire screen to the Clipboard.
• Alt + Print Screen – copies only the active window to the Clipboard. Open Paint or another image editor, press Ctrl + V, and save the image.

On some laptops, you may need to hold the Fn key while pressing Print Screen. The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
